Common Name:  Drooping She-oak

An Australian native occurring from the Eyre Pensinsular across Victoria, south east New South Wales and Tasmania.  Growing up to 10 m with pendulous foliage, Allocasuarina verticillata is nitrogen fixing and tolerates salty coastal winds.  Uses include erosion control in clay and sandy soils, a windbreak/shelterbelt tree and drought fodder.  Timber is used in turnery, posts and firewood.

Common Name:  Desert Quandong

Endemic to the central deserts and southern regions of Australia.  Grows 4 to 6 m tall and 2 to 4 m wide, it makes an attractive ornamental specimen in the garden.  Flowers are fragrant with a green/white outer and red/brown inner.  The fruit is a well known bush food, are red or yellow and the flesh is used in jams, sauces and confectionery.  The nuts have ornamental uses such as jewellery.

Common Name:  Peruvian Pepper

An evergreen native of the Peruvian Andes, Schinus molle grows to 15 m tall.  The new growth on upper branches tend to have a drooping habit.  Profuse drooping clusters of small, white flowers occur on the end of branches and the following fruit resembles pink peppercorns.  Used as an ornamental garden or street tree.

Common Name:  Carob Tree

Ceratonia siliqua is native to the Mediterranean region.  Grows up to 15 m, is deep rooted and adaptable to a variety of soil conditiions.  Trees are male or female with some occurence of bisexual trees.  Only female trees fruit.  With dense foliage, shiny green leaves and bronze new growth, it is ideal as an ornamental shade tree for gardens.  Flowers in summer followed by large pods.  Dried pods are ground to make carob powder, used as a substitute for chocolate.
